Hardship, backward, bad economy, low social status and lack of educational resources are the stereotypic images people easily to have about farming villages. But as soon as we stepped into it our ideas were changed. After investigation and analysis, we realize that lands and waters are the most productive resources of farming villages, they not only support local people but also the needs of cities. Farming villages actually possess the survival power during crises. Life in farming villages is very different; dishes for dinner could be from groceries or from the yards, kids can have fun in playgrounds or in the fields and creeks. Convenient or not depends on how one looks at it.
So what on earth farming villages don’t have? When the environment is more and more fragile and energy crisis is impending, are farming villages still in disadvantageous status compared to cities? Perhaps we should have a perspective of futurology so we can find and to strengthen the advantages of farming villages. Topography in rural areas and the local wisdom in commonplace inspire our design greatly. In terms of design, grand landscape can be dealt as the assemblage of “units” to respond people’s experience of living and working on these lands. On our return to farming villages we activate the connections of different functions and build a network for living. From living to production, resources of lands are rearranged, and even the materials and techniques of manmade environment are transformed.
This design proposal focused on the “economy of retirement” for an ideal living in farming villages. Through applying flexible frames and common building craft in Taiwan, we experimented a construction system of low costs; meanwhile, responded to people’s expectation about activities in the streets. Architectural and structural approaches got mature after reexamination on design and discussions about the spatial strategies for shared living functions. With limited resources we tried to meet diversified needs in order to sustain the development of a shared lifestyle.
