201208 Retyping--

Aligning the topographic map of Taiwan printed in 1904 with the maps of urban planning made in different ages, we attempted to figure out the original reasons of the formation of the streets and the possible patterns of old streets. From these maps we realized that the settlements “Putze” on northern Citong in the past had patched up several types of spaces, such as the traditional compounds, two-floor concrete houses added to old compounds that were cut through for new roads, or townhouses along the newly constructed access roads. As time goes, new patterns of living appear.

The phenomena of spaces reflect the reality of this place: Citong is facing outward migration and an aging population. Old houses mixed with new houses, between old style compounds often are empty lands without clear boundaries, messing up the yards of households. Old streets are not well connected to outside roads, remodeled houses are not equipped with necessary facilities; the living status no longer meets the needs of retired people or the aging population in Citong. Today the prior work for Citong is to transform spaces through spatial differentiation, and find “connections” as the intermediacy between spaces in order to satisfy people’s different needs in living.
